Enhanced collaboration and reach for research and innovation to tackle impacts of hydroclimatic extremes on cultural heritage.

Mission

Developing innovative tools and strategies to enable collaboration between diverse stakeholders in Europe and beyond to inclusively address sustainable management of cultural heritage threatened by hydroclimatic extreme events.

SD-WISHEES strives to enhance collaboration with widening countries to the Horizon Europe Programme through the launch of joint activities.

SD-WISHEES project aims to enable strategic coordination and cross-sector collaboration between national (R&I) funding members, researchers, innovators and a wide variety of stakeholders to address together the protection of cultural heritage in Europe and beyond in response to more and more frequent and severe hydroclimatic extreme events such as droughts and floods.

Cultural heritage here refers to historical sites, natural sites and intangible assets (i.e. knowledge, traditions).

Strategic planning of activities

Identification the main R&I needs on the water-climate change-cultural heritage links within the ERA and, therefore, drive the strategic planning of the collaboration across Europe and in widening countries, specifically including in the Balkans and Africa | Results from the activities will also inform the identification of the priority thematic areas that will feed into the consideration of the Thematic Annual Programming (TAP).

Launch and monitoring of joint activities

Supporting and widening Research & Innovation uptake for market, regulatory, and societal impact

Aiming to enhance the uptake of research and innovation (R&I) results by identifying effective practices and exploring innovation pathways for protecting and adapting cultural heritage from hydroclimatic extreme events with a specific focus on improving the interaction between science, policy, and society | Analysis of existing mechanisms and instruments for disseminating and utilizing R&I results |Engagement of stakeholders, including research organizations, private sector users, policy makers, practitioners, and NGOs to co-develop and demonstrate instruments that promote the adoption and appropriate utilization of R&I results across Europe and widening countries (in particular Africa and West Balkans).

Human Rights-Based Approach

Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) is considered in all aspects of the project to ensure that the selection of stakeholders is non-discriminatory, participation is inclusive, data is treated with respect and transparency, and that systems are in place to create accountability and respect people’s opinions such that a more innovative and sustainable outcome is achieved.

In SD-WISHEES, the Water JPI, the JPI Climate and PRIMA have joined forces to address existing challenges around the protection, adaptation and resilience of cultural heritage in a context of climate change and the occurrence of hydroclimatic extreme events.

The outcomes of SD-WISHEES come in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the European Green Deal and Adaptation Strategy.
